Which Church Is Best For Me?

12/11/2015

Sometimes we look for answers to the wrong questions.  If we start with a wrong question how can we get a right answer?

"Which church is best for me?" could be one such question.
If our primary reason for looking for a church is to please ourselves, then we are looking for the wrong thing.  When human teachings and preferences dictate what a church does, it is not following God, as Mark 7:6-7 shows,
"He answered and said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 7 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’" (New King James Version)
There are a great many churches in the world that will cater to all kinds of preferences, but they miss the point that we should not be trying to please ourselves, but God.
When we look for a church that will please ourselves, what we are doing is placing our wants above God's.  This is being self-serving.
Jesus said of the church:
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18, New King James Version)
The church belongs to Jesus, not us, so we need to go to him to find out what we must do to please God.
In John 20:30-31, we read:
"And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name."
We need to go to God's word to find out what to do to please Him, we must not assume if something pleases us, then it will please God. Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us:
"'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,' says the LORD.  9 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways,  And My thoughts than your thoughts.'"
So, returning to the question, "Which church is best for me?", the answer is the church that we can read about in the Bible, any other church is the creation of humans and will not bring one to be with God.
